The Deck of Cards
Blackjack is played with a traditional deck of cards. This means there are cards going from A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, and K. You’ll also have all 4 suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades.
All cards are valued at the number they are, which means a 2 is 2 points. An A (ace) can be either 1 or 11 points, while a J is 11, Q is 12, and K is 13. The suits don’t matter for blackjack (except in some variations of the game, but those are rare).
How to Play
The dealer will give everyone 2 cards, including themselves. Depending on where you’re playing, these cards might be dealt all face-up or face-down. The exception is the dealer, where 1 card is face-up and one is face-down.
Each round, you’ll decide whether you want to keep your cards (stand) or add another (hit). If you reach 21, you automatically win, except if the dealer also reaches 21. In that case, you won’t win or lose your bet.
If you’ve got 2 of the same cards, you can decide to split them. This means you have 2 hands, so you have double the chances of winning. However, you also have to put down an additional bet.
Do note that at some blackjack tables, the dealer must hit if they have a 17. This can change your strategy up a bit.
